Validator

Node responsible for securing a blockchain network

What is Validator?

A participant in a proof-of-stake network who locks up tokens as collateral and runs infrastructure to produce blocks and verify transactions. Validators earn rewards for honest behavior and lose stake (slashing) for misconduct. On Polkadot, validators secure the Relay Chain and, by extension, every parachain connected to it. Running a validator requires technical infrastructure, reliable uptime, and significant DOT stake.

💡

In plain words

"A trusted notary for the blockchain — they stake their own money as a bond, verify transactions, and get paid for honest work. Cheat, and they lose their deposit."

How it works

Key takeaways

  • Stake their own tokens as collateral

  • Produce and verify blocks

  • Slashed if they act maliciously

Real-world example

A validator on Polkadot runs high-availability servers, stakes 10K+ DOT, and produces blocks. Nominators back them with additional stake. Everyone shares rewards.
