Why it's in the kit

I needed one camera that could sit on a tripod for 90-minute interviews and also come with me on the road without compromise. The A7 IV is the first body that made both feel native — autofocus locks and I stop thinking about it.

How I run it

In a SmallRig cage with a quick-release plate, paired with the 24-70 GM II for talking-head. Picture profile stays on S-Cinetone for skin tones I can grade fast; a Ninja V records ProRes externally only when the take matters.

What I almost bought

  • Sony FX3 — Better in low light but overkill — I don't shoot enough run-and-gun at night to justify it.
  • Sony A7S III — Older AF generation; the A7 IV's subject detection is a real step up.

Skip it if

If you only publish to vertical short-form, a current phone plus a gimbal will outproduce this rig for a fraction of the cost.
