Why it's in the kit
The SM7B is the closest thing to a cheat code for voice. It rejects room noise so well I can record in an untreated room and still sound like I'm in a studio. It needs a lot of clean gain — pair it with a Cloudlifter or a RODECaster Pro II.
How I run it
Bolted to a boom arm over the desk, XLR into the RODECaster Pro II with the broadcast preset doing the heavy lifting. Pop filter always on; gain staged so I sit about 6 inches off the grille.
What I almost bought
- Rode PodMic — Half the price but noticeably less forgiving of an untreated room.
- Shure MV7+ — USB option, but the SM7B sounds more finished out of the box.
Skip it if
If you record purely on the road, a USB mic like the MV7+ skips the gain staging entirely.
